Description

−

Norditropin® NordiLet® is Novo Nordisk’s brand of somatropin, supplied in a prefilled disposable pen. The pen comes in three strengths, with a color code for each: 5 mg/1.5 mL is orange, 10 mg/1.5 mL is blue and 15 mg/1.5 mL is green. This product is the 10 mg pen, which holds 1.5 mL of solution at 6.7 mg per mL. Doctors prescribe Norditropin to children with growth hormone deficiency, growth failure linked to chronic kidney failure, Turner syndrome and short stature after being born small for gestational age, and to adults with growth hormone deficiency. The pen is designed for use with NovoFine needles. Growth hormone is also discussed in sports and anti-aging circles, but that use isn’t approved.

Composition

+

Norditropin® NordiLet® is recombinant human growth hormone, a protein of 191 amino acids that matches the natural hormone and is made in E. coli bacteria. It’s a ready-to-use liquid, so nothing needs to be mixed. Each mL contains 6.7 mg of somatropin, and the pen holds 1.5 mL. It’s given under the skin with a click-style dial. Unused pens need to be kept in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C.

Outcome

+
  • In children, supports growth in height when the body doesn’t make enough growth hormone, or when kidney failure, Turner syndrome or low birth size limits growth.
  • In adults with deficiency, replaces the missing hormone to support muscle mass, bone density and a healthier balance of body fat.
  • Raises IGF-1, the hormone that carries out most of growth hormone’s effects. Doctors use IGF-1 blood levels to guide treatment.
  • The click-style pen is built for simple, consistent injections at home.
  • Effects build slowly over weeks to months, and doctors judge the response with growth checks and blood tests.
  • Outside the approved medical uses, these are commonly discussed associations in community and research literature, not approved performance claims.

Side Effects

+
  • Headache, tiredness and injection-site reactions such as redness, pain or small lumps.
  • Swelling of the hands and feet, joint and muscle pain, and numbness or tingling in the hands.
  • A rise in blood sugar and insulin resistance, which is why sugar levels are checked.
  • Low thyroid hormone levels in some people.
  • In children, a limp or hip pain, and faster curving of the spine in those with scoliosis.
  • Increased pressure inside the skull, which can cause severe headache, nausea and vision changes.
  • Rarely, pancreatitis, which can show up as stomach pain.
  • This is not a complete list and should not be treated as medical guidance.

Important Safety Information

+
  • Contraindications: Do not use it with any sign of an active cancer. A tumor inside the skull must be inactive, and anti-tumor treatment must be finished, before treatment starts. It should not be used during acute critical illness, with active proliferative or severe non-proliferative diabetic eye disease, or with a known allergy to somatropin or its ingredients. It should not be used in children whose growth plates have closed.
  • Common Side Effects: Injection-site reactions, headache, joint pain, swelling and tiredness.
  • Serious Risks: High blood sugar and diabetes, increased skull pressure, hip and spine problems in children, pancreatitis, and concerns about tumor growth in people with a history of cancer.
  • Single-Patient Pen: Each pen is for one person only and should never be shared.
  • Storage: Unused pens should be kept in a fridge at 2°C to 8°C and not frozen. Once opened, a pen can be kept for up to 4 weeks. For the 10 mg pen, some labels also allow storage at no more than 25°C for up to 21 days.
  • Medical Supervision: Norditropin is a prescription medicine. A doctor should guide its use, with regular checks of growth, blood sugar, thyroid function and IGF-1.
  • Drug Testing: Growth hormone is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
